Steve Tanzer 92 points - The 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape is a mid-weight, medium-bodied effort that has complex olive, tobacco leaf, cured meats and sweet currant fruit. A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, aged in a combination of concrete, foudre, tank and small barrels, it has building tannin and a classical, balanced feel on the palate, but I’d still love a smidge more concentration. Nevertheless, it’s borderline outstanding and I suspect it will have over a decade of longevity.

CHATEAU CLOS DU MONT OLIVET 2012 CLOS DU MONT OLIVET CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE

"Opaque ruby. Highly aromatic bouquet of black raspberry, peppery spices and potpourri, with a zesty mineral nuance providing focus. Spicy and penetrating, with very good clarity to its lively flavors of red berry preserves, rose pastille and spicecake. Shows potent floral and spicecake character on the long, gently tannic finish, which leaves a hint of smoky minerals behind." Wine maker notes
The historical wine from the estate. Mainly coming from old vines of Grenache, a classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape exhibiting its 1/2 terroir with lots of depth. Production 45000-55000 bottles.

Producer
Various sources report that in 1957 a deed was signed before a solicitor which concerneda plot of vines located in 1/2 ad montem Olivetti but it wasn’t until the begining of the XXth century that the association between the Sabon family and this locality was forged. Seraphin Sabon, a native of the the neighbouring village of Serignan du Comtat married Marie, daughter of Romain Jausset, landowner at Chateauneuf-du-Pape. In 1932 they created the 1/2 Clos Mont Olivet Since then the domaine has passed through the hands of Joseph, eldest son of Seraphin and then his children. Today it is Celine, David & Thierry SABON the grandchildren of Joseph who manage the estate.
