An expressive bouquet with powerful aromas of ripe red fruits with hints of violets and minerals. On the palate, it is fresh, elegant and clean. The tannins are sweet and the acidity is well integrated.
Wine Advocate 90 points - Dark and medicinal smelling, with brandied blackberry and hard cheese aromas. The palate features big fruit resting on a beam of acidity, which yields semisharp black plum and granular berry flavors. Finishes with some clamp and chop.

Steve Tanzer 88 points - The 2008 Baltos made from 100% Mencia and aged for 6 months in seasoned French and American barriques. It offers up an earthy minerality along with aromas of cherry cola and spicy black fruits. Dense, rich, and layered on the palate, this juicy, pleasure-bent effort has enough stuffing to evolve for 1-2 years but can be approached now. It is an outstanding value.

Wine Enthusiast 87 points - (100% mencia) Vivid ruby. Red berries and cherry pit on the nose, with complicating notes of smoky herbs and cracked pepper. Nicely focused dark fruit flavors are given spine by juicy acidity and show a touch of bitterness on the back. Gentle tannins add shape to the spicy dark fruit finish. This is drinking well now. -- Josh Raynolds

2008 DOMINIO DE TARES BALTOS BIERZO

"The 2008 Baltos made from 100% Mencia and aged for 6 months in seasoned French and American barriques. It offers up an earthy minerality along with aromas of cherry cola and spicy black fruits. With the discovery of old, low-yielding hillside vineyards by young winemakers, Mencia produced from these old hillside sites are rich, complex with great concentration. However, the notion (inaccurate) the Mencia produced light red somewhat duluted wines have kept price low and made these wines excellent values.

Wine maker notes
Named after the inhabitants of the mythological island of Baltia, cited in Naturalis Historia by Plinius, who would celebrate their harvests. The label is an allegory of harvest by the famous Spanish artist, Manuel Calvo. An excellent introduction to Bierzo’s native varietal, Baltos has an expressive bouquet with powerful aromas of ripe red fruits and hints of violets and minerals. On the palate, it is fresh, elegant, and clean. The tannins are sweet and the acidity is well integrated. The wine was aged in second-use French and American oak barrels for 6 months and 6 months in bottle. Best within a few years of the vintage with grilled meats and seasoned chicken dishes, as well as tomato-based pastas.

Food pairing
Enjoy with grilled meats and seasoned chicken dishes, as well as tomato-based pasta dishes.
