|In the early 1800’s, Quarry Vineyard was part of the large Spanish land grant ranch know as Rancho Caymus. After 1848, and California’s inclusion into the United States, Rancho Caymus was divided into smaller sections for homesteading. In 1873, the homesteaders arrived at Quarry Vineyards and began to farm the land. In 1881 Charles Scheggia and two partners purchased the ranch and begun what has become over 125 years of grape growing and wine making at Quarry Vineyards. During the 40 years of Scheggia stewardship, terraces were carved from the rocky and challenging hillsides, vineyards were planted to Zinfandel, and rock was quarried to build a winery. Scheggia sold the property in 1920 to Emil Werle for $10.00 and a handshake (and forgiveness of a bar tab, so we have been told).
For the next 72 years the Werle family produced a field blend of primarily Zinfandel. Also, they reopened the historic stone quarry, planted Walnut orchards and eventually opened a Christmas Tree farm.
In 1979 Werle subdivided the northern most 25 acres, selling to Wayne Hogue who created The Terraces Winery. Hogue selected Cabernet Sauvignon from Grace Family and Zinfandel cuttings from the property and replanted several acres. The 1985 Zinfandel was the first wine bottled under The Terraces label.
The remaining 88 acres sold to the Crull family in 1992. With the assistance of Beringer, the Quarry vineyard was replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Beringer’s first harvest of replanted fruit was in 1997, producing a Vineyard designated Cabernet Sauvignon called Quarry Vineyard. Currently, in addtition to The Terraces, Nickel & Nickel and Frank Family use this fruit in their acclaimed Napa Valley wines continuing the history of Quarry Vineyards.
