MARIETTA OLD VINE LOT 63
"Their great value pick, which has essentially underwritten the wineryís success for many years, is their non-vintage Old Vine, and in this case, the NV Old Vine Red Lot 63, the sixty-third rendition of this lovely blend. Dominated by Zinfandel, but also containing Syrah and Petite Sirah, itís always meant as a boisterous, exuberant Mediterranean-style red, the likes of which are easy to find in parts of Spain, Southern Italy and Southern France. The oak is pushed back to a minimum, and the NV Lot 63 includes wine from four vintages: 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, which makes these blends about two years of age. Itís an amazing value and has been in every rendition. Deep ruby in color, with notes of pepper, grilled or roasted herbs, steak tartare and briary, delicious black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, the wine is well-made, medium-bodied, supple and luscious. They produced about 60,000 cases, so availability is terrific and the wine capable of lasting 4-5 years, if not longer. But thatís not the point Ė itís meant to be drunk upon release." |Old Vine Red is our modern California version of an Old World table wine - one that can be enjoyed with food or without, for a special occasion or for simple pleasure. It is a non-vintage blend of mostly Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Carignane with small amounts of other varieties included for complexity. Old Vine Red is a delicious, well-made, textured and balanced wine that continues to be amazingly consistent 30 years after the first lot was released.
|Marietta’s version of a traditional field blend, the fruit for this Zinfandel based blend was harvested from vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino.
|Marietta Cellars, located just outside of Geyserville in Sonoma County, was founded by Chris Bilbro in 1978. In recent years Chris’s sons, Jake and Scot, representing the second generation, have taken over most of the responsibilities.
