Initial aromas of cherry and roses with hints of balsamic, rosemary, licorice and black tea mingle with ripe red fruit, dried rose petals and whiffs of cloves and black truffles. The finish is long and persistent.
Wine Advocate 92 points - The 2008 Montepulciano d?Abruzzo Bellovedere is hugely impressive. The blackest, sweetest of cherries, licorice, melted road tar and spices are some of the notes that burst from the glass in this opulent, full-bodied wine. Despite the Bellovedere?s sheer exuberance and glycerin, there is plenty of underlying minerality to give the wine its sense of energy, purity and vibrancy. This is an unquestionably full throttle style, but it all works beautifully. I especially like the way the wine continues to open up in the glass, seemingly turning more vibrant with air. Sweet spice and cloves flesh out on the generous, inviting finish. There is so much to like here. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.  (Feb 2013)

Wine Spectator 90 points - This dense, rustic red displays a dark mix of cherry reduction, plum sauce, grilled herb, cocoa and spice, with full tannins framing the minerally finish. Drink now through 2020.—N.W. (Dec 19 2012)

Founded in 1990, Fattoria La Valentina is located in Spoltore, Italy along the Adriatic coast. Owner Sabatino Di Properzio founded the property in 1990 to revitalize the venerable wines of this region Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. In 1998, Di Properzio partnered with Stefano Inama to launch Binomio, a project dedicated to producing authentic expressions of terroir and variety using traditional farming methods. That same year, Di Properzio hired winemaker Luca D’Attoma. Luca combines organic and biodynamic practices with modern technology to grow the best quality fruit possible. The 49 acre, south-southwest facing Bellovedere vineyard is situated on a hillside near the Adriatic Sea and is planted with 10-30 year old Trebbiano, Pecorino, and Montepulciano vines. The nine acre Binomio vineyard sits at 1,312 feet at the foot of Maiella Mountain in southern Abruzzo and is planted to Montepulciano. Soils at the estate are a blend of clay, clay-calcareous marl and loose, medium-grade sandstone. The area’s warm and dry summer paired with cold winter temperatures provide the ideal growing environment. Estate vineyards in Scafa and San Valentino total 37 acres and are planted with Trebbiano, Pecorino, Montepulciano and Fiano vines that range from 4-40 years old.
Technical notes
The fruit macerated and fermented in Slavonian oak open-top conical vats for 30 days, aged in French oak and Slavonian oak vats for nearly 18 months and finished maturing in concrete vats. The wine was racked and bottled unfiltered.

Producer
Fattoria La Valentina, founded in 1990 by Sabatino Di Properzio, is located in Spoltore on the central Adriatic coast. In recent years several artisan producers have arrived on the scene and are turning out top quality wines from Abruzzo’s indigenous Montepulciano and Trebbiano varietals. La Valentina is at the forefront of this movement. Following initial and extensive viticultural research, Di Properzio began promoting Abruzzese DOCs of the highest quality. Two major developments in 1998 supported this goal – initiating the Binomio project with Stefano Inama and hiring Luca D’Attoma as winemaker. While taking a very traditional approach to farming and employing organic and biodynamic farming methods, Di Properzio also uses current technology, ensuring the fruit’s integrity from grape to glass. The soil is made up of clays, clay-calcareous marls, usually loose and medium-grade sandstone. The Spoltore hillside vineyard, near the Adriatic Sea, is southsouthwest facing – 5 acres of Trebbiano and 12½ of Montepulciano vines were planted 27 years ago and Spelt and Bellovedere are produced from this vineyard. The 10 acre Binomio vineyard, planted entirely with Montepulciano, is located in Abruzzo Citeriore at 1,640 ft. above sea level. The unique features of the region’s microclimate, combined with vines well-suited to the land, give the wines their distinctive qualities.
