Vinous 95 points - The 1998 Brut Clos d’Ambonnay appears to have arrived at an early plateau of maturity. Hints of white truffle, orange peel, licorice, honey and roasted almonds are woven together in a super-appealing melange of aromas, flavors and textures.  (Jul 2015)

Wine Advocate 93 points - The 1998 Brut Blanc de Noirs Clos d’Ambonnay reaffirms my impression from last year. The 1998 is a rich, vinous Clos d-Ambonnay with generous fruit and an inviting, open personality. Crushed flowers, plums, cherries and sweet spices all flow from the glass. Today, the 1998 is rich, deep and highly expressive. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.  (Nov 2012)

Wine Spectator 98 points - A powerhouse, featuring well-sculpted acidity and rich mineral character, showing an overall sense of finesse, with a palate-caressing texture and beautifully layered flavors of creme de cassis, black cherry pate de fruit, treacle, dried papaya, clover honey, fennel seed and ground spice, ringing out on the finish. Drink now through 2035. From France.—A.N. (Sep 25 2013)

The rarest of all Krugs, Krug Clos d’Ambonnay is the exceptional product of a single walled vineyard in the village of Ambonnay, which has been one of Krug’s best-loved terroirs for generations. In this supremely elegant champagne, the characteristic structure and refinement of Ambonnay’s Pinot Noir grapes are elevated to their ultimate expression by long years of ageing in the cellars.
Producer
Since 1843, six generations of the Krug family have cultivated the markedly individual character of their exceptional champagne, showing that same single-mindedness and sense of purpose with which the founder, Johann-Joseph Krug, set out alone in pursuit of his objective of creating a champagne with a taste all its own.
