The Lilliano estate is located in the commune of Castellina, north of Siena in the Chianti Classico zone of Tuscany. Princess Eleonora Ruspoli Berlingieri, whose family bought the estate in 1920, began bottling and selling wine in 1958. Her sons Giulio and Pietro Ruspoli are the current owners. The property comprises 3 vineyards – Le Piagge, faces south at 1080 ft., La Ripa with an east/southeast exposure at 950 ft. and Vignacatena faces south/southwest. The 110 acres of grape vines are planted on two types of Tuscan soil – Alberese compacted calcareous rock and Galestro – a type of marl composed of layers of limestone and compacted sand that breaks easily. The well known and respected Lorenzo Landi is in charge of the winemaking. Vineyard manager, Stefano Porcinai is known for having overseen the Chianti Classico Project 2000, a ten year research of the Sangiovese grape to determine the best clones for the Chianti Classico region.
