A deep violet red, the nose is redolent of ripe dark stone fruit and berries. Great minerality, fruit concentration and a tremendous finish.
Wine Advocate 92 points - The estate’s 2009 Barbera d’Alba Superiore is one of the deepest, richest and darkest wines I have tasted from this vintage. Still an infant, it bursts from the glass with raspberry jam, cloves and French oak, all wrapped around a serious, intense frame. Sweet, silky tannins frame the opulent finish. This is a decidedly flashy, extroverted wine for Vajra, uncharacteristically rich and poulet, but beautiful if taken on its own terms. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.  (Oct 2012)

Wine Spectator 90 points - This concentrated red features black currant and black cherry flavors, with a hint of black pepper. A touch of oak lends tannins to the grape’s natural acidity. The finish is long and fruit-filled. Drink now through 2015. 1,067 cases made. –BS  (Feb 28 2013)

The estate of GD Vajra, established in 1972 is situated in Vergne, the highest village in the Commune of Barolo. Its vineyards are planted with Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera at heights of 350-400 meters, which results in distinctive and aromatic wines. Their philosophy remains faithful to the traditional and authentic wines of Piemonte. “I try to make wines that give people joy. In the past wine was a food, it was necessary for sustenance. Today that is not the case; we choose to drink for pleasure. I want to make wines that bring people happiness.” ~ Aldo Vajra
Technical notes
The fruit for this wine is grown in two exceptional vineyards - Bricco delle Viole in Barolo and Bricco Bertone in Sinio. The hand-picked fruit was fermented and macerated in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 20 days with manual punch down and aged for 20-24 months in Slavonian oak casks.
