Wine Advocate 90 points - Pio Cesare?s 2010 Barbera d?Alba Fides is quite beautiful in this vintage. Raspberry jam, cloves, mint and licorice meld together in a voluptuous, seamless Barbera supported by the vibrant acidity of the year. The fruit has more than enough structure to stand up to the French oak, something that hasn?t always been the case. The French oak is evident, but it is better integrated than it has often been in the past. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. (Oct 2012)
In 1991, Pio Cesare purchased a small estate in Serralunga dí Alba, close to the Ornato vineyard. This new estate is a perfect location, facing south, and could have been a great Barolo vineyard. Instead, they removed the nebbiolo vines and replaced with barbera. Ageing for twenty months in small French oak barrels as well as 25 hectolitre casks, contributes a sweetness and longevity of tannins. The colour is wonderful, typical of the barbera varietal. The palate is surprisingly supple, round and soft, with good acidity. This wine has great ageing potential.
