Wine Advocate 92 points - The 2009 Nero d?Avola Riserva Don Antonio comes across as a bit restrained in this vintage. Varietally expressive red fruit, flowers and mint come alive in this vibrant, beautifully delineated version of the flagship Don Antonio. The 2009 is all about grace and polish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019. (Feb 2013)

Wine maker notes
Don Antonio is a fine Nero d’Avola, with a deep purple colour suggesting an aroma of voluptuous ripe cherries, rose, sweet spices, liquorice and cocoa. It is a silky red wine but with an imposing structure enhancing a blend of persuasive and refined tannins Don Antonio is a perfect match for matured cheeses, roasted red meat and braised wild game.

The Morgante winery is located in the pristine countryside of southern Sicily. Grotte is a city in the province of Agrigento that was at one time famous for an abundance of sulphur mines. The winery represents one family's initiative to employ five generations of viticultural experience and for the first time, make their own wine from the fruit of their vineyards.

In 1994, Antonio Morgante, with the enthusiasm of his sons, Carmelo and Giovanni, decided to vinify his own grapes. This decision represented the beginning of a strong commitment to achieve the best results with indigenous grapes like Nero D'Avola while keeping an eye towards innovation and international grape varietals as well. In 1997, a stroke of luck brought Riccardo Cotarella to the winery. With Riccardo, the Morgante family found a common desire to continue their research into producing great red wines from Nero D'Avola.

The Morgante winery consists of 500 acres comprised of vineyards and almond trees in a hilly region that is located approximately 1,150-1,800 feet above sea level and only 45 miles from the splendid valley of the temples of Agrigento. The region represents an ideal for viticulture with a Mediterranean climate and soil that ranges from clay and chalk to chalk and marl.

In Sicily, Nero D'Avola is indisputably the red grape for wines of excellence. The Morgante family has always cultivated this varietal. Bud break, in early June, is generally accompanied by a climate that is particularly mild with gentle, fresh breezes. During the maturation period, warm days and cool nights allow for exceptional ripening. All aspects of production from vineyard to cellar are rigorously controlled by every member of the family, each dedicated to making wines of the highest possible quality.
