Wine Advocate 88 points - Representing a first-time bottling (of only some hundred 6-packs), the Ponzi 2010 Chardonnay Avellana suggests freshly-milled grains along with candied lemon rind and apple, displaying what I call the “memory of malic acid” even though chemically speaking it was all converted to lactic. This also betrays the relatively newness of its barrels in a resinous streak. The upshot is harder in feel and in no way as alluring as the corresponding 2009 Reserve (which very small single-vineyard bottlings like this one may now supplant). But there is a sappy sense of refreshing primary juiciness to this Avellana bottling as well as a satisfying, subtly saline and meaty savor that helps knit its elements together in a finish managing to encourage the next sip. It will be interesting to see how this evolves over the next several years. (Aug 2012)
