The wine aged for 19 months in French oak (78% new)and combines the deep, brooding notes of Cabernet with the ripe, round fruit overtones of Merlot and the savory green herb and olive notes of the Cabernet Franc. Its firm texture nicely marries tannins with lifted acidity.
Double Eagle is a double entendre – it refers to the rare, three under par golf shot and the limited production Bordeaux blends made by David Grieve and Vance Rose in Napa, California. 2006 was the first vintage of Double Eagle and it set the stage for all vintages to follow; the grapes are sorted by hand in the vineyard, again in the winery and for a third time after destemming. Double Eagle Red is made in limited quantities using the best barrels of each varietal from a single vintage.
|(60%Cabernet Sauvignon/20% Merlot/20% Cabernet Franc). Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were sourced from vineyards located in St. Helena, and the Merlot from the Grieve Family Vineyard in Napa. The fruit fermented for 21 days, with a three day extended maceration and full malolactic.
|Owner David Grieve is an avid lover of wine, but Sauvignon Blanc was not always at the top of his list of favorites. In 2002 David bought a house on 10 acres in the middle of Lovall Valley and adjacent to his house was a Sauvignon Blanc vineyard on 60 acres of land. Soon David was well versed in Sauvignon Blanc from California and in 2004 he purchased that vineyard. David was introduced to Vance Rose, a wine marketing veteran with 30 years experience. Vance agreed to join him and quickly persuaded Michael Terrian, a seasoned artisan winemaker, previously at Hanzell and Acacia, to join and make the wine. Lovall Valley straddles the Napa/Sonoma county line, north of Carneros, west of Mt. Veeder, east of the town of Sonoma, and is mostly within the Napa Valley AVA. At 554 feet, the secluded valley is only accessible from the Sonoma side. The vineyard sits in the center of the valley on pebbly clay loam soils. Two separate clones in two distinct blocks provide diversity for more complex flavors.
