Founded by industry veterans William Hill and Dick Wollack, Expression Wines was formed to explore the impact of latitude and terroir on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The winegrowing regions include the Santa Rita Hills (34º), the Sonoma Coast (38º), the Anderson Valley (39º) of California, and the Eola-Amity Hills (44º) of the Willamette Valley, Oregon.
William has 30 plus years of experience as a vintner and vineyard designer who has developed more than 40 high-end vineyards. Dick is co-founder of Premier Pacific Vineyards, one of the largest managers of high-end vineyards with properties in California (Santa Barbara, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Napa counties), Oregon and Washington. Joined by winemaker Patrick Mahaney, the group practices sustainable viticulture, rigorous triage and employs a minimalist approach in the cellar all to allow a full and natural expression of the varietal, vintage and terroir.
|Anderson Valley in California’s Mendocino County now ranks with the top Pinot Noir regions in North America. While production is not huge, quality is soaring, as it is becoming more and more known for producing sleek, powerful Pinots.
An unusual transverse appellation -- cutting laterally through the coastal range rather than lying between ridges -- Anderson Valley is also a mere 10-15 miles from the cold Pacific Ocean. These factors result in a wide diurnal range, with daily high and low temperatures diverging up to 40 or 50 degrees. This enables Pinot Noir growers to keep acid development in line with sugar and flavor formation through long, warm Indian summers.
We produce one vineyard designate wine from the Anderson Valley (Annahala Vineyard) and an Anderson Valley blend.
Annahala® is located halfway between the towns of Philo and Boonville on Highway 128 in Mendocino County. Taking advantage of the cool Pacific Ocean air that funnels from the “Deep End” of the Anderson Valley toward Boonville, Annahala® is ideally influenced to produce world-class Pinot Noir. This, combined with expert development and viticulture, helps to make Annahala® an excellent showcase vineyard for Expression 39°.

Pinot Noir is notoriously fickle, but can be brilliant when grown in the right terroir. Expression Wines represent a commitment to producing the finest Pinot Noir from the best sub-appellations on the West Coast. Based on this, Expression is able to produce the best Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir.
Our vineyards at different latitudes represent different ‘Expressions’ of great Pinot Noir and our winemaker, Patrick Mahaney, is dedicated to crafting only the best wines from each region. Our winegrowing regions include the Santa Rita Hills (34°), the Sonoma Coast (38°), the Anderson Valley (39°), and the Eola-Amity Hills (44°) of Willamette Valley, Oregon.
Our goal is to showcase both the ‘Grand-Cru’ vineyards and the terroir of each sub-appellation. Each vintage, we will be bringing to you our finest blends from each latitude as well as small single vineyard designate lots that represent the best of what our vineyards can deliver!
