A core of minerality frames delicate notes of lemonzest, citrus and pretty white florals. The long and full finish is textured and complex and features fruit and balanced acidity, not oak. 2012 was the first time this wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
Wine Advocate 92 points - Opening with a pretty nose of peach blossoms, spiced apple slices and honeysuckle with nuances of meal, lightly buttered toast and preserved ginger the 2012 Chardonnay is medium to full-bodied with a youthful palate already showing great poise with plenty of stone fruit, savory and toasty flavors enlivened by a refreshing acid line before finishing with satisfying persistence. Drink it now to 2018+.  (Oct 2013)

Founded in 1991, Felton Road is located in the Bannockburn appellation of Central Otago, New Zealand, the world’s most southerly wine growing region. Its inaugural vintage, 1997 was met with immediate critical acclaim and the winery has continued to build its reputation as a premier producer of balanced, elegant wines. Owner Nigel Greening and winemaker Blair Walter employ sustainable practices throughout the estate. The Elms, Cornish Point an Calvert Vineyards are farmed biodynamically. All 79 acres are meticulously farmed - shoot thinning, shoot positioning, leaf plucking, bunch thinning and harvest are all carried out by hand. Cover crops are planted between rows to assist in vine balance and to improve soil health and general biodiversity. Blair’s experience in Oregon and Burgundy form the core of his winemaking philosophy his hands-off approach incorporates gravity flow and he relies solely on wild yeasts. Only estate fruit is used. No additions or adjustments, including fining or filtration are avoided unless absolutely necessary and the wines age in French oak barrels made by artisanal Burgundian coopers. The Pinot Noirs are fermented with partial whole clusters and vinified in a traditional manner with moderately long macerations on their skins without pump overs. These wines reflect character of place and show that elegance and finesse are wholly compatible with the notions of concentration and complexity.
Technical notes
Several different clones of Chardonnay (Mendoza, B95, B548, 15 and 6) were whole bunch pressed and the freerun juice was immediately transferred via gravity to barrel. The wine fermented in French oak (10% new) and received periodic batonnage over 12 months.

Producer
Felton Road wines is located in Bannockburn, Central Otago in New Zealand, the most southerly wine growing region in the World. Here, vineyards are nestled into small microclimates totally surrounded by high mountains, many of which are snowcapped all year round. These microclimates consistently combine hot days, cool nights and long dry autumns: perfect for the creation of fine Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. The latitude of 45 degrees south is similar to the Willamette Valley in Oregon and some of the finest wine regions of France.

At Felton Road, our philosophy is to let the fruit speak for itself: gentle handling, as little intervention as possible. Our wine is given a helping hand to express itself rather than moulded into an artificially created winery style.
