Fiddlehead Cellars was founded in 1989 by owner and winemaker, Kathy Joseph. Kathy produces just three wines a Pinot Noir from Sta. Rita Hills, a Sauvignon Blanc from Santa Ynez Valley and a Pinot Noir from the Chehalem appellation in Willamette Valley, Oregon. Estate fruit for Fiddlehead Pinot Noir Seven Twenty Eight is sourced from Fiddlestix, a 96 acre, sustainably farmed vineyard. Kathy retains the top 15% of fruit and sells the remainder to other prestigious local wineries. Oldsville Reserve is made using grapes from the 70 acre Alloro Vineyard and Happy Canyon is Kathy’s homage to Loire-styled Sauvignon Blancs. The winery is located in Lompoc, California’s ”Wine Ghetto.” The fiddle has become a contiguous theme for the winery, linking Kathy’s own nom de plume, the “Head Fiddle, and “Fiddlefest, “her annual event that celebrates the vines from that year’s harvest.
Technical notes
The soils at Alloro Vineyard are a regional mix called Laurelwood decomposed volcanic material with ancient sedimentary topsoil. The wine is named after Oldsville Road in McMinnville, Oregon where Kathy made her first 15 vintages of Pinot Noir. The certified sustainable grapes were destemmed, fermented in small open-top vats with daily punch downs. and the wine aged for 11 months in neutral French oak.
