Vinous 90 points - (a blend of sangiovese, sagrantino and other grapes; 14.5% alcohol): Inky purple. Deep, refined aromas of smoky dark plum and ink complicated by botanical herbs (here the sagrantino dominates). Very dense and rich but fresh too thanks to vibrant acidity, which lifts the deep black and red fruit flavors. Turns massively tannic towards the back on the long finish; this can certainly be cellared for a few more years.
90+ Points (Mar 2013)
Wine Advocate 91 points - The 2008 Montefalco Rosso Riserva, a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot is delicious. It is also the most overlooked wine in the Caprai range, as most of the focus here is on Sagrantino. Firm tannins support a core of expressive dark red cherries, earthiness, tobacco, smoke and licorice. The 2008 needs another year or two in bottle to start softening. Elements of rusticity will always remain, but there is no shortage of personality. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023. (Feb 2013)
