Color - Garnet-red with ruby highlights that take on a slightly orange tone over time Bouquet - Intense nose with overtones of vanilla, spices, withered roses and underbrush. Taste - Dry, full-bodied with velvety texture and great balance. It is very long-lasting.
Vinous 90 points - Fontanafredda’s 2008 Barolo Serralunga wraps around the palate with serious intensity and muscle. This is pure Serralunga in its dark fruit, iron, tar and scorched earth. Powerful tannins frame the incisive, long finish. I see Fontanafredda’s straight Barolo as an excellent restaurant wine, despite its considerable power and sheer exuberance. Overall, this is an impressive showing from Fontanafredda. I look forward to seeing what winemaker Danilo Drocco and his team did with the single-vineyard Baroli at Fontanafredda and their sister property, Mirafiore.  (Oct 2012)

Wine Spectator 91 points - Theres a hard, iron edge to this red, softened somewhat by ripe cherry and strawberry flavors. Licorice and earth accents chime in as this unfolds to the long finish. Just a bit dry in the end. Best from 2016 through 2029.B.S. (Jan 2 2013)

Vineyards are located in medium and upper slopes (985-1300 feet above sea level). All vineyards face south/south-west. The soils are of Miocene-Helvetian origin with a high content of limestone and grey marl alternating with sand.
Wine maker notes
Vines are guyot trained with plant density around 4,400 plants/ha. Harvest takes place in the first half of October. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented for 15 days in stainless steel vats with a floating cap at a controlled temperature (85-87°F). The must then stays in contact with the skins for a further 15 days to optimize the extraction and help start the subsequent malolactic fermentation.

Technical notes
100% Nebbiolo

Food pairing
Ideal with hearty red meat dishes and medium or mature cheeses.

Producer
In the heart of wine-growing Piedmont – in the hills of the Langhe – Fontanafredda was born: chronicles of the time relate that “by order of 17 June 1858? an area of 138.82 “giornate piemontesi” (approx. 54 hectares) of the property of Roggeri Giacomo, son of Giovanni Battista in Serralunga d’Alba, was registered under the private estate of Vittorio Emanuele II King of Sardinia. The king, who had fallen hopelessly in love with Rosa Vercellana, also known as “La Bela Rusin”, a commoner and daughter of a drum major at his majesty’s service, gave the entire parcel of land to her, making her Countess of Mirafiori and Fontanfredda a year later. The history of Fontanafredda had begun, but it did not start operating as a business venture until twenty years later, in 1878, thanks to the farsightedness of Emanuele Guerrieri, Count of Mirafiore, son of the king and Bela Rusin, a noble entrepreneur who devoted his life to wine with a very modern approach.
