2017 DROUHIN JOSEPH PULIGNY MONTRACHET CLOS DE LA GARENNE PREMIER CRU
"The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Garenne 1er Cru, which was taken from cask, has a delightful array of scents: orange blossom, hints of apricot and crushed stone, turning quite floral with continued aeration. The palate is very well balanced, displaying walnut and smoke on the entry, and quite flinty in style, maybe just lacking the complexity of the Meursault Charmes toward the finish." (from a new supplier in 2016): Pale, bright yellow. Vibrant if youthfully tight aromas of lemon, lime and fleurs de vignes (Veronique Drouhin noted that this wine smells like the flowering vineyards do on the day of our tasting, June 1). Tighter in the mouth than the Folatieres, conveying a less-sweet impression. Firmly built and delicate but on the lean side today and in need of time to absorb more of its acidity. This doesn't show the early balance of the Folatieres but that should come with some bottle aging. (Incidentally, Veronique Drouhin asserted that 2010 was the last vintage with which the family had any issues with premature oxidation, and she noted that they still avoid using Diam corks except for their 375-milliliter bottles of white wines.)
