Damilano Barolo Cannubi Riserva 1752 2015
"Incredible, reserved ripeness and depth already evident on the nose after one whiff, offering plum, cedar, rose hip, sandalwood, and licorice. Full-bodied with superb depth of fruit and an abundance of polished tannins that give the wine poise and grace, even though it’s long and powerful. The quality of the tannins are exceptional. Sheer and refined. This comes from the center of Cannubi. Aged five years in Stockinger cask." James Suckling 99 points Drink 2024-40
This is all about the ripe fruit, which is beginning to hit a sweet spot. Cherry, currant, cut hay, eucalyptus, iron, tar and tobacco flavors mingle, showing beautiful balance and length. There are still serious tannins that need to be resolved. Best from 2023 through 2047. 500 cases made, 50 cases imported.
The 2013 Barolo Riserva Cannubi 1752 opens a wider window onto one of the most applauded and balanced vintages in recent years. The 2013 growing season was long and had cool nights going into harvest. These conditions helped to develop the aromatic intensity and precision of the bouquet and the linear tendencies of the mouthfeel. Made with a special selection of fruit from the Cannubi vineyard, this Riserva shows dark cherry, cassis, iron ore, licorice and camphor ash. The wine has aged enough to give you an idea of where it's going, and the best bet is to let it continue its journey. I suggest a medium to long drinking window for this top-shelf bottle from Damilano.
